Christmas is a time when all the joys of life are celebrated. It’s a time for family, for travel, and for entertainment. Lisbon fills its streets with Christmas lights as early as mid-November and the cities venues receive some wonderful shows, filled with life, colours and joy. The Circus is coming to town!

The circus in Portugal will soon undergo some dramatic changes. A new legislation will be passed that prohibits the use of animal acts in the Circus. So this year the Circus in Portugal, will fill with what could be the last animal acts, including tigers, horses, camels, lions... and many more surprises. Come and enjoy the Circus, a show filled with entertainment, good humour and brilliant performances.

At the Coliseu dos Recreios

For both the young and adults, the Coliseu dos Recreios will be receiving various circus acts this christmas. Smiling clowns will open the show that will be filled with laughter and great entertainment.

The first act will involve Miss Seal, playing with a ball and doing several tricks within a crystalline blue pool. Mr. Elephant is on next, wanting to show his abilities with a ball, and interacting with the crowds as he shows off his great tricks. Many more artists, animals and entertainers will fill the stage during a night at the circus. So grab some popcorn and a balloon, and enjoy this evening full of joy and animation!

The famous Chen Circus

On the 27th of November, this circus began its shows. Having joined forces with the USA company, which fills the circus with a large set of performances, the circus Chen has become widely known for its great offer of entertainment. With the famous Siberian tigers, acrobats, trapeze acts, clowns and many others, the Chen Circus is bound to animate your evenings. Come and enjoy an afternoon at the circus, just sit back and watch this show full  of adrenalin and great acts.

Cardinalli Circus

Cardinalli is one of the most famous names in the Circus industry in Portugal. The performances are organised thinking about you and your family. With many exotic animals and great humoured clowns and other performers, it is definitely an enjoyable evening for both the young and adults.

Christmas joy in a tram

Let your children get to know the city by tram, with Father Christmas driving. Decorated with all the typical colours and forms of Christmas on the outside, this tram ride is full of surprises on the inside. For nearly two weeks you may book a trip for your children to hop on the tram that goes from Santo Amaro (near Alcântara) to the beautiful Praça da Figueira (near Rossio) between 9h00 and 17h00. Artists animate the route with tricks and games, by motivating the children to participate in common activities. Presents may also be given on board.

The Sleeping Beauty Opera

One of the most beautiful fictional princesses, the Sleeping Beauty, gains a new life at this children’s opera by Ottorino Respeghi. It will be accompanied by the Symphonic Portuguese Orchestra and the Teatro São Carlos’ choir. Young artists, such as, Luisa Francesconi, Ana Franco, Raquel Alão and the actor Tiago Cruz help put this beautiful performance together. An evening to enjoy a beautiful Opera, performed by a group of fantastic singers, musicians and actors.

Theatre

Zig zag comes to town once again. This show unites some of your young children’s heroes, such as Miffy, the Koala Brothers, Postman Pat, Shaun the Sheep and many many others. This year this performance tells the story of a great trip, a charming story that fills the stage with great surprises.
