Elevating Art

Lisbon is famous for its (much needed) elevators up its steep slopes. The traditional elevators have been modified by four invited artists.

Alexandre Farto covered the Bica elevator with a mirror, to reflect its life in the best manner: reflecting its people. During the day, the Bica elevator is a transport and during the night people gather here to have drinks.

The Lavra Elevator has been filled with phrases by Fernando Pessoa, by the artist Vasco Araújo.

The Santa Justa Elevator is the most international one of all, as it is filled with tourists looking for one of the best views in Lisbon. Susana Mendes Silva translated the same message in many languages, trying to trigger a dialogue between the travellers.

At Glória, there are two elevators that at some point cross each other. It is at this  precise moment that Susana Anágua tries to show balance, force and tension between both moving vehicles by producing a mechanism that provokes a flash when they both cross.
