Rossio Railway Station Rossio Railway Station was for many years, the main train station for national and international journeys. The project was designed by an architect called José Luis Monteiro. Its construction began in 1886 and was opened 4 years later with the name Estação de Avenida (Avenue Station) only later becoming Rossio. - Lisbon Image Gallery
The Belém Tower The Torre de Belém (Belém Tower) is one of the most important monuments in Lisbon. It was built between 1512 and 1521 in the Manueline architectural style, a Portuguese late gothic style developed during the reign of the King D. Manuel I to commemorate the Vasco da Gama expedition and discovery of India. The Tower is 35 metres tall, divided into four floors, and was used as a bulwark on the coast of Belém, as a prison and as a customs office. Some historians argue that, due to its height and lack of architectural integration with its surroundings, the Tower was mainly used as an advanced post for the customs office. - Lisbon Image Gallery
Perched on one of Lisbon’s highest hills, the historical site of São Jorge Castle offers visitors breathtaking views of the city below. The Moors reconstructed the castle walls and occupied the area for over 400 years before the Reconquista in 1147, when Portugal’s first King was declared. The Discoveries? Monument, situated in Belém The Discoveries? Monument, situated in Belém, was built to honour the Portuguese Discoveries. The monument was ordered to be built in 1940 for the Portuguese World Exhibition, an event organised to commemorate the foundation of the Portuguese Republic (1140) and the Restoration of Independence (1640). It was later destroyed in 1958. The one standing now is a replica of the original and was constructed in 1960 during the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the death of the first Portuguese King, Infante D. The Palácio Nacional da Pena is one of the most visited monuments in Portugal The Palácio Nacional da Pena (Pena National Palace) is one of the most visited monuments in Portugal. The history of the Palace dates back to the Middle Ages, when a chapel dedicated to the Nossa Senhora da Pena was built there. In 1493, King D. João II ordered a monastery to be built. In the XVIIIth century, the monastery was severely damaged by a lightning bolt and later, by the great earthquake of 1755, which left it in ruins for many decades. In 1838, the monastery was bought by King D. Fernando II, married to Queen D. Maria II who transformed it into a Palace to serve as a Summer residency for the Royal Family. It was acquired by the Portuguese State in 1889 and in 1910, after the Implementation of the Republic, it was classified as a National Monument. The bull ring at Campo Pequeno was opened in 1892 The bull ring at Campo Pequeno was opened in 1892, and became an emblem of the city due to its great beauty. Its architecture was inspired by Madrid?s bull ring. In 2006, after a complete renovation, the bull ring at Campo Pequeno re-opened as a multifunctional building. The National Sintra Palace The Palácio Nacional de Sintra (National Sintra Palace), dates back to the XVth century. It was used as a Summer residence by the Royal Family, as was the Palácio Nacional da Pena, until close to the end of a Monarchical State in Portugal, in 1910, when it was declared a National Monument. This convent was founded in 1389 This convent was founded in 1389 by Nuno Álvares Pereira and was initially occupied by Carmelite monks from Moura. It was the main gothic church in Lisbon, but turned to ruins in the destructive 1755 earthquake and was never rebuilt. The Mafra Palace The Palácio de Mafra (Mafra Palace) was built by D. João V, the Mafra Convent is the most important Portuguese Baroque monument. Palace Nacional de Queluz This palace was ordered to be built in 1747 to be used as a Summer Residency for the royal Family in the second half of the XVIIIth century. José I was King of Portugal between 1750 and 1777, the date of his death. His reign stood out particularly because of the politics of his Prime Minister, Marquis of Pombal. The Prime Minister reformed both the Portuguese economy and the society converting Portugal into a more modern country. The construction of the Arch of Triumph of Rua Augusta began after the terrible earthquake that devastated Lisbon in 1755 and was demolished in 1777 (after the dismissal of the Marquis of Pombal). This square in front of Hotel do Bairro Alto marks the transition between Chiado and Bairro Alto. In the centre of the square is a statue built in 1867 of the great Portuguese poet Luís de Camões. In this photo one can see one of Portugal's capital's oldest quarter, the Alfama quarter. It is a very typical neighbourhood where one can find lots of homemade food restaurants and Fado concerts. The inauguration of the Salazar Bridge or Tagus River Bridge, as it was called then, was on the 6th August 1966. This square marks the centre of the Baixa Lisboeta (downtown Lisbon). The D. Pedro IV square is surrounded by several historic buildings. Exhibitions are also set up here, like the one in this photo. The River Tagus has the notable distinction of being the longest in all Portugal and Spain. It empties into the Atlantic Ocean by Lisbon after having wound through 1008km from the Serra de Albarracín where it rises in Spain. It was from this river that all the boats sailed to discover the New World in what was later called the age of Discovery. The tower of this lift looks like a Gustave Eiffel project, and that is for a reason: It was designed by Raul Mesniere and the French architect Louis Reynaud who used several techniques and materials used in France at that time, the beginning of the 20th century. The Praça do Comércio, also known as Terreiro do Paço, is located in downtown Lisbon. Nowadays the buildings that surround the square house several government ministries except one which is the famous Martinho da Arcada, the oldest café in Lisbon and also one of the famous poet, Fernando Pessoa?s, favourites. The two towers facing south towards the Tagus River look over the noble entrance of Lisbon. The Parque das Nações is the name given to the area where the world EXPO?98 took place. It has become the most modern part of Lisbon. With a centre for cultural activities, the Oceanarium, its own sports institutions and the Lisbon Casino, this area is one of the most attractive in the capital city of Portugal. The Belém Cultural Centre, also known as CCB, affords three functions, a congress centre, a concert hall complex and an exhibition centre. The building also has several shops, a restaurant and two bars. The concert hall complex has three halls that are equipped to house different kinds of shows, from ballet to cinema. The exhibition centre houses the Berardo?s Foundation modern and contemporary art collection (Fundação de Arte Moderna e Contemporânea - Museu colecção Berardo) since 2007. One of the only remaining funicular railway lifts in Lisbon is the Elevador da Glória. Open since the 24th October 1885, this tram-like lift makes the 265m connection up a steep hill between the Praça dos Restauradores and Bairro Alto. In the Bairro Alto when one gets off the lift one can not miss the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara on the right, from where one can enjoy one of the best views of the city, especially of the Castelo de São Jorge. The Eduardo VII park honours the king of England (1841-1910) due to a visit the king made in 1902 to strengthen the alliance between the two countries. In the park there are two hothouses, one called the Estufa Fria and the other the Estufa Quente. The Striped catshark The Striped catshark is an inoffensive fish with nocturnal habits and lives close to the bottom of coastal waters. The Sea Otter is a mammal that's perfectly adapted to life at sea. Its fur is made of two layers, intercalated by air bubbles, which keep her dry and warm. The Clownfish, immortalised by the cartoon Nemo, from the movie "Finding Nemo", has a mucus membrane that protects him from the poison spikes of the anemones. So, this species of fish uses the anemones for shelter and protection, hiding between their tentacles. The Persian Leopard is one of the biggest of its species. It has a strong and slim body with long yellow fur, with dark rose shaped spots. This species is nocturnal, solitary and territorial. This Manueline style building The Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (Jerónimos Monastery), built in the XVI century, is one of the most important monuments in Lisbon. This Manueline style building - a Portuguese late gothic style developed during the reign of the King D. Manuel I - took 50 years to be built. The Teatro Nacional D. Maria II (National D. Maria II Theatre) was opened on the 13th of April 1846 during the commemorations of the 27th anniversary of the Queen D. Maria II, hence its name. The idea came about in 1836 due to the growing need of having a National Theatre in Portugal to represent the national dramas in a fitting place. The old headquarters of the Inquisition in Portugal, the Palácio dos Estaús (the Estaús Palace) had been destroyed in a fire in 1836, so it was the ideal choice for the new Theatre. This square is dedicated to the restoration of the independence of Portugal in 1640, after 60 years under Spanish control. In the middle of the square there is an obelisk built in 1886 on which there are several names and dates carved in of all the battles fought during the Restoration War.
