The Jerónimos Monastery
This Manueline style building

The Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (Jerónimos Monastery), built in the XVI century, is one of the most important monuments in Lisbon. This Manueline style building - a Portuguese late gothic style developed during the reign of the King D. Manuel I - took 50 years to be built. The monastery was financed at the time, with a 5% tax imposed on the imports of spices. In 1983, it was classified as World Heritage site by UNESCO.
