Clubbing: Lisbon nightlife clubs

LUX Frágil

As the sun sets on Lisbon, the wonderful bright light fades, but the city gains a whole new life. The steep and cobbled streets of Bairro Alto fill with people finding a restaurant and a bar to start their evening. Lisbon has gained a reputation for being one of Europe’s best nightlife cities. The bars are open until the early hours of the morning and bar hopping is very common. But no Lisbon night ends here...

After some bar hopping until 4 am, the locals head down to the clubs, so to really enjoy your night in this city, it's recommended you arrive between 2 am and 4 am at the clubs. There are a great number of places you may visit, from those playing house music to those with live bands. Most clubs are large spacious areas. Some are even warehouses converted into discos. The decorations mix minimalism with classic ornaments. And the music you hear pleases every taste, from those who want to hang around until the early dawn, to those who just want an extra drink. We have chosen the best and most exclusive clubs in Lisbon to recommend to you.

BBC

B
elém Bar Café (BBC) is a restaurant-bar-club opened in 2001 by João Menezes and a famous Portuguese actor and model, Paulo Pires, becoming immediately one of the most fashionable places in Lisbon.
With a beautiful view over the river Tagus, BBC has two bars inside the club and two outside on a terrace. It is open throughout the day, so you can wine and dine at the restaurant, whilst listening to jazz that is normally performed live. After dinner, the club gains life with some house music, either by invited DJs, or by the stimulating resident DJs. Many exclusive events are organised here by social figures, musicians, actors or models. Admission goes between €10 and €20.

A
new club animating Lisbon’s nightlife is called Gossip. You won’t be leaving it without spending a few hours the next day “gossiping” about it. With the latest themes being played by some of the best DJ’s in town, a decoration based on white washed walls, with a huge dance floor and several bars, Gossip is a new clean face in the clubbing scene. It’s been a success since its recent opening in December 2009 and promises to keep being so for many more nights.

Kapital Kapital

K
apital is part of the biggest Club running group in Portugal.
The K Group owns clubs in Lisbon and in the Algarve and has projects for an opening in Porto. Kapital is one of their most exclusive clubs. It has a very tough door policy, so you have to watch what you wear. This warehouse-turned-club opened in the early 90’s and since then has focused on the city’s elite. Inside Kapital, the decoration mixes a modern style with classical forms creating a beautiful and impressive space to enjoy your night. It has three different floors, each of them playing a different style of music, so it fits many tastes. The top floor is the most select area, being a VIP lounge for politicians, businessmen and other groups that would rather a more reserved and expensive area. Around the club you may have a sit-down and a calm chat, or go crazy on the dance floor. Entrance fee will vary from €10 to €20.

Lux Fragil

No Lisbon nightlife guide will leave Lux unmentioned. Lux has been considered one of the best clubs in Europe. Partly owned by John Malkovich, Lux has been an “it” club since its opening in 1999. It’s a recuperated warehouse, with white walls, and red sofas and long and thick velvet curtains covering the huge windows. Lux has an amazing view as it is on the river bank. With an upper level for more alternative sounds, this is an ideal place to have a drink before heading downstairs to dance to the latest and most cutting edge DJs of the nightlife scene. Such a club demands a selective doorman, and, on most weekends there is a long queue at the door. Prices to enter vary between €12 and 30€.

Silk Silk club

This is the most exclusive club of Lisbon’s nightlife scene. You will understand why, once you are in. With a 270º panoramic view over the city, on the 6th floor of a building in the centre of the bucolic Chiado, Silk is situated in one of the most exciting parts of town. It has a restricted and very selective entrance; to get in you have to reserve in advance. There is an elevator with an exclusive access to Silk. You arrive on a floor with a bathroom and a cloakroom, and head up the stairs to one of the most beautiful rooms in Lisbon. The interior decoration blends in with Lisbon’s night skyline. The Tagus river has never seemed more imperial and the city so bright. Inside the decoration is obviously modern, but with a warm touch to it, inviting you to feel at home. The music played is mainly house, and you can both dance and sit for long conversations with a bottle of champagne. Enjoy a drink at the bar, a whiskey will start at around €10.
