Jazz in Lisbon

Jazz was born from the black community of New Orleans, which found in music a form of expression during a time that black people’s rights were suppressed. It developed from many musical traditions, predominantly from african-american music. It incorporates blues, swing and ragtime beats, but what makes jazz special is improvisation. Lisbon has a few jazz bars where jazz players come and act and improvise, sometimes. They are great venues for many of the world’s most famous and renowned bands to come and perform.

Onda Jazz

Situated in the typical Portuguese neighborhood of Alfama, the Onda Jazz bar offers a different tune to the many Fado bars around this area. Onda Jazz has maintained a great offer of music, although focusing greatly on Jazz, this bar offers a wide variety of Jazz rhythms, including African and Oriental sounds, and even Latin ones. The best Portuguese artists perform here, including Bernardo Sassetti and Mário Delgado.

Espaço Lisboa Jazz

The jazz sounds in Espaço Lisboa Jazz explore the many variations of this art. From blues to fusion, the program here tries to please all tastes. The diversified offer attracts different crowds each night, making this a vibrant place to go and get to know. Situated in Alcântara, on the top floor of the Espaço Lisboa restaurant, this bar has an intimate feel to it, with large comfortable chairs set out to make your evening truly enjoyable.

Catacumbas Jazz Bar

Catacumbas Bar has become a cult spot in Lisbon. Although it only offers jazz music, Catacumbas is a well-known name in the bar industry. It is the only jazz bar in the Bairro Alto area, which famous for its immense offers in nightlife venues. With a simple decoration, filled with black and white pictures on the walls and a piano at the end for clients to sit and play, Catacumbas Jazz Bar is a fun and friendly place to go and listen to Jazz.

NetJazz Café

Held within the famous Chapitô circus school, this jazz bar could not be a disappointing spot. It used to be an old prison for women in the XIXth Century,  and the tank where the women used to shower has been converted into a stage. This is one of the many features this space has reminiscing the past, as this café nowadays has a modern, comfortable and original concept. The jazz played here is soothing and entertaining, a great place to socialize and just be.
