Monumento aos Descobrimentos
The Discoveries? Monument, situated in Belém

The Discoveries? Monument, situated in Belém, was built to honour the Portuguese Discoveries. The monument was ordered to be built in 1940 for the Portuguese World Exhibition, an event organised to commemorate the foundation of the Portuguese Republic (1140) and the Restoration of Independence (1640). It was later destroyed in 1958. The one standing now is a replica of the original and was constructed in 1960 during the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the death of the first Portuguese King, Infante D. Henrique, the Navigator.
